How can an occupational therapist help?
An occupational therapist can identify the cause of your difficulties and recommend practical solutions, such as:
- ways to increase your independence
- choosing and sourcing equipment
- alternative ways of doing things
- eliminating hazards
- organising your physical environment to support you
When to see an occupational therapist
If you are experiencing any of the following, an Occupational Therapist may be able to help.
- Everyday tasks; e.g. preparing and eating meals and snacks, getting up from chair, bed or toilet, dressing and undressing, toileting
- Leisure activities; e.g. accessing hobbies/interests, accessing sports, getting out and about
- Work; e.g. pain and discomfort, work tasks, getting about the workplace, time management, stress
- Pre school/school: engaging in learning, concentrating and focusing, friendships, getting about, handwriting, aggression, clumsiness, reading
- Sensory overload: difficulty coping with sound, light or other environmental distractions
